Sip, Hussein Chalayan Spring 2012: Served by the designer himself dressed as a waiter, the champagne flutes were embedded with miniature wireless cameras, which projected real time video of the models’ mouths on a large stage-mounted screen, hence the title of the collection.
“What I wanted to do was to have the models drink champagne like they would do in a gallery, and look at the screen like they’re actually looking at something but all they see is themselves, but themselves sipping because there is a secret camera inside the glass. I thought it would be this idea of self-image, and that’s essentially what it’s about.”

I passed my MFA thesis defense today with my paper on sound design and the voice in Enter the Void. Everyone on my committee was really complimentary about my work and the paper’s going to be published in SCAD’s cinema studies journal. The paper was heavily influenced by structuralism and psychoanalysis with a lot of references to Silverman, Lacan, and Barthes and I really hope that I did them all justice, but at least my professors seemed convinced. Spoiler alert: it’s all about the mirror stage.
